Spiritual Decline in Reformed Churches in SA

Abstract: The form of spiritual decline that is occurring in Reformed (Calvinistic) churches in South Africa comprises the denial of fundamental Christian doctrines. The five doctrines involved are (1) a premillennial eschatology, (2) sanctification as a second work of grace, (3) salvation through regeneration, (4) the inerrancy of the Bible as God’s Word, and (5) the Deity of Jesus. Pentecostalism and Its Impact

Introduction

In writing this analysis, it is important to note that the Pentecostal movement is diverse and heterogeneous. Some charismatic Christian groups are extremely adhoc and fluid in technique, such as the Wesley and quasi Pentecostal-Baptists churches, whilst other groups are more organized and rigid. For example, the United Pentecostal Church, other so-called independent “Oneness” Pentecostals and at times the Assemblies of God. And as a result, the diversity of Pentecostal movements must be taken into account when reading this analysis.

“WHY I LEFT THE PENTECOSTAL CHURCH” (2 Tim 3:14)

Paul could have been thinking of me when he wrote this verse to a young man named Timothy. I was born into a Pentecostal family of many years. My grandfather preached “fire and brimstone” from the time I could remember until his death in 1968. He was some-what an intimidating individual who was demanding and abrupt. I was taught that only those who were “chosen” or “called” could ever enter into the “faithful” ministry of our Lord. I never challenged his thinking or his preaching. What he said was like a direct command from Jesus Christ himself. With this in mind .. at the age of 12 .. I was told I was being called into the ministry and preached my first sermon shortly thereafter. I spent a total of 18 years preaching as a “Pentecostal” preacher. I taught the “Jesus Only” doctrine known as the “Apostolic Faith” (United Pentecostal Church).

Ten Kinds of Spiritual Foolishness

The knowledge of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Pro 9:10). Contrary to this, the beginning of foolishness is to deny God and think and live according to one’s own, limited understanding. The natural knowledge and desires of human beings are perverted because of the Fall. A life without the knowledge of God is the breeding-ground for deception and wrong priorities.
